The eight psychology professions

South Africa registers psychology professionals in eight categories, each with a legally different scope of practice. Working out which one you need is usually the hardest part, these pages explain the difference.

  • Clinical Psychologist

    Assessment, diagnosis and psychological intervention in respect of psychopathology, mental health difficulties and psychological distress across the lifespan.

    Cannot prescribe medication, that is a psychiatrist or medical doctor.

  • Counselling Psychologist

    Psychological assessment and intervention aimed at optimal adjustment, development and wellbeing in people experiencing life difficulties and adjustment problems.

  • Educational Psychologist

    Psychological assessment and intervention in respect of learning, development and behaviour of children and adolescents within educational and family contexts.

    Cannot prescribe medication, that is a psychiatrist or medical doctor.

  • Registered Counsellor

    Preventative and supportive psychological counselling, psycho-education, screening and basic intervention within a defined scope of practice.

    Cannot diagnose.

  • Neuropsychologist

    Psychological assessment and intervention in respect of cognitive, behavioural and emotional functioning associated with brain function and injury.

    Cannot prescribe medication, that is a psychiatrist or medical doctor.

  • Psychometrist

    The administration, scoring and reporting of psychological and psychometric tests, including cognitive, scholastic, career and aptitude assessments.

    Cannot diagnose a mental health condition or provide psychotherapy.

  • Industrial/Organisational Psychologist

    Psychological assessment and intervention in respect of individuals, groups and organisations in the workplace.

    Cannot prescribe medication, that is a psychiatrist or medical doctor.

  • Research Psychologist

    The design, conduct and evaluation of psychological research, and the development and validation of psychological measures.
